Combined Post: End of the Year Survey: 2014!

So I saw that Kelley over at Oh, the Books! filled out this survey and I thought Heather and I should do it too since we rarely actually make posts together. This survey was made by Jamie over at The Perpetual Page Turner and it's her fifth year hosting it, but it's our first year participating! And here we go!
For the tiny bit that it's necessary, Kaniesha's answers will be in blue and Heather's will be in purple.
Also, very long post warning!

Kaniesha Reviews: The Rose Master by Valentina Cano

Title: The Rose Master
Series: Stand-Alone
Author: Valentina Cano
Release date: June 2014
Publisher: REUTS Publications, LLC
Genres: fantasy, magic, gothic
Goodreads
The day Anne Tinning turns seventeen, birds fall from the sky. But that's hardly the most upsetting news. She's being dismissed from the home she's served at since she was a child, and shipped off to become the newly hired parlor maid for a place she's never heard of. And when she sees the run-down, isolated house, she instantly knows why:

There's something wrong with Rosewood Manor.

Staffed with only three other servants, all gripped by icy silence and inexplicable bruises, and inhabited by a young master who is as cold as the place itself, the house is shrouded in neglect and thick with fear. Her questions are met with hushed whispers, and she soon finds herself alone in the empty halls, left to tidy and clean rooms no one visits.

As the feeling of being watched grows, she begins to realize there is something else in the house with them--some creature that stalks the frozen halls and claws at her door. A creature that seems intent on harming her.

When a fire leaves Anne trapped in the manor with its Master, she finally demands to know why. But as she forces the truth about what haunts the grounds from Lord Grey, she learns secrets she isn't prepared for. The creature is very real, and she's the only one who can help him stop it.

Now, Anne must either risk her life for the young man she's grown to admire, or abandon her post while she still can.

Kaniesha Reviews: The Young Elites by Marie Lu

Title: The Young Elites
Series: The Young Elites #1
Author: Marie Lu
Release date: October 7th 2014
Publisher: Putnam Books for Young Readers
Genres: fantasy, high fantasy, magic, dystopia
Goodreads
I am tired of being used, hurt, and cast aside.

Adelina Amouteru is a survivor of the blood fever. A decade ago, the deadly illness swept through her nation. Most of the infected perished, while many of the children who survived were left with strange markings. Adelina’s black hair turned silver, her lashes went pale, and now she has only a jagged scar where her left eye once was. Her cruel father believes she is a malfetto, an abomination, ruining their family’s good name and standing in the way of their fortune. But some of the fever’s survivors are rumored to possess more than just scars—they are believed to have mysterious and powerful gifts, and though their identities remain secret, they have come to be called the Young Elites.

Teren Santoro works for the king. As Leader of the Inquisition Axis, it is his job to seek out the Young Elites, to destroy them before they destroy the nation. He believes the Young Elites to be dangerous and vengeful, but it’s Teren who may possess the darkest secret of all.

Enzo Valenciano is a member of the Dagger Society. This secret sect of Young Elites seeks out others like them before the Inquisition Axis can. But when the Daggers find Adelina, they discover someone with powers like they’ve never seen.

Adelina wants to believe Enzo is on her side, and that Teren is the true enemy. But the lives of these three will collide in unexpected ways, as each fights a very different and personal battle. But of one thing they are all certain: Adelina has abilities that shouldn’t belong in this world. A vengeful blackness in her heart. And a desire to destroy all who dare to cross her.

It is my turn to use. My turn to hurt.

My reading for November was a lot better than past months but still not my best! I doubt I'll go over my page goal if I hit it at all - which is 20k. I'm sitting at around 19200 pages for the year, last time I checked. But hitting that last goal is the last thing on my todo list, so hopefully I can accomplish it and set myself some (realistic) new goals for next year! See you guys next month for our yearly hauls ;)

Booking Through Thursday: November 27

Booking Through Thursday is a book blog meme presented by BTT2 at Wordpress. They post a question about books every Thursday and you have the whole day to reply back!  Let's look at this week's question:
How much do you actually read? Few of us get as much time as we’d really LIKE for reading, but do as much as we can, so … how many books do you read? How many hours a day?
Heather:  (Due to book slump~) Lately when I read I usually devote about three hours to it.  I can't guarantee I read every day though, not only because of the book slump but also because I work out and then try to spend a few hours with my grandma.  When I do read, I try to make sure I read two books at the same time.

Kaniesha:  When I'm really into reading, I regularly read six books a month. I know that's not a lot in comparison with a lot of book nerds but I do other time consuming things and have a short attention span so it's my best. I have a lot of free time though, so I kind of disappoint myself but I'm also easily burnt out so I'm okay with my mood-reading.

If I'm really into a book, I can read it for 2-3 hours in a go in different intervals until I'm finished. If I'm not, it'll take 30 min-1 hour intervals until I'm finished or put it off until later. My reading habits are just all over the place! Not to mention when I'm in a book slump, I'll one read one or two books a month and pick up other hobbies. I just really don't like forcing myself to do things I do for fun.

Kaniesha's TTT: Top Ten Books I Want To Reread

Top Ten Tuesday is a book blog meme created and hosted by The Broke and The Bookish. This week we're choosing the top ten books we want to reread!

1. Eragon by Christopher Paolini
2. Inkheart by Cornelia Funke
3. The House of the Scorpion by Nancy Farmer
4. Shadowland by Meg Cabot
5. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

6. Infinity by Sherrilyn Kenyon
7. The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan
8. Uglies by Scott Westerfeld
9. The Merchant of Death by D.J. MacHale
10. Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater

Coming up with this list was harder than I thought! All of these are my favorites - I probably wouldn't be who I am today without having read them. It's amazing how much books can open your eyes, even if it's - and maybe especially - not something you'll ever experience. A few of these I'm very, very fuzzy about on the details at this point (I read a few when I was in middle school!) so I really want to re-read them soon.

Monthly Releases: November 2014

As of August 2014, Kaniesha and Heather will be posting their most anticipated to-be-released books of the month instead of individual WoWs every week.

Kaniesha's:

Not my most impressive list but let's be honest, publishing slows down at the end of the year! I'm really looking forward to Nikolas Lee's newest titles. He's a really impressive writer!

Heather's:

Two.  =/  Ah, well.  As Kan said, publishing slows down at the end of the year.  That said, I'm extremely excited to be getting my signed copy of Waistcoats & Weaponry (hopefully next week!).  I want to read it as soon as I can.

Summary:
I'm finally getting back into the habit of reading :D 4 books finished this month! Better than the past two months where I read one and two respectively. I've kinda faded out of my video game and youtube obsession - so I'm back to doing what I like to do best. Reading! Mostly. I'll still be gaming and watching youtube videos, I'll just have to manage my time and hobbies better! How was everyone else's October? :)

Kaniesha Reviews: Blood Orange Soda ARC by James Michael Larranaga

Title: Blood Orange Soda
Series: Stand-Alone
Author: James Michael Larranaga
Release date: February 26, 2014
Publisher: JML
Genres: vampires, urban fantasy
Goodreadsbuy the book
Darius Hunter lives in a world where vampires live among normal humans. Young vampires like Darius are kept on a government-mandated medication that prevents them from becoming fully undead until they’re 18. He’s smart, sensitive and all-too human—a struggling outsider who’s just trying to fit in, find a girlfriend and escape the attention of football bully Bao Wang.

It’s his humanity that often keeps him from his hopes and dreams, so Darius’ “cool uncle” Jack, a vampire, introduces him to a substance called Blood Orange Soda. This strange analog of steroids can speed Darius’ maturation into his full vampire state, but it can’t guarantee that he’ll avoid disrupting the lives of his mother and sister, win the love of Angel Martin or successfully face up to Bao. It also doesn’t make him immune to heartbreak and loss.

The author takes familiar themes of YA fiction—vampires and teen romance—and treats them with a surprising empathy and respect that gives them real weight.

Booking Through Thursday is a book blog meme presented by BTT2 at Wordpress. They post a question about books every Thursday and you have the whole day to reply back!  Let's look at this week's question:
What’s the scariest book you’ve ever read?
Heather:  Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House comes to mind, if only because one scene in particular freaked me out so bad I wasn't sure if it was something that actually happened or something from the book.  XD  It was great at creating atmosphere and I believe that's essential for a scary story to have, especially if the author wants you to be afraid.

Shout out to the original illustrations in The Scary Story trilogy books though.

Kaniesha: The Light by D.J. MacHale! I got so scared that in order to read it, I had to go out into the living room during the day to read it :( I actually haven't read too many scary books, the next would have to be his Pendragon series in general (there's 10 books in the series) and Libba Bray's The Diviners (very freaky). I'm also reading two "scary" books right now and, honestly, neither of them is very scary. I think I'll have to move up into adult books to get some real fear! Not that that will happen any time soon. Trying to get myself to read these books right now has been a hassle in itself.

Booking Through Thursday is a book blog meme presented by BTT2 at Wordpress. They post a question about books every Thursday and you have the whole day to reply back!  Let's look at this week's question:
If someone you know has just published a book—do you feel obliged to buy a copy? Even if it’s not the kind of book you’d normally read?
Heather:  Yes.  I feel like it's always important to support my friends in any endeavors they undertake, even if said thing isn't something I'm normally a fan of.  And who knows, maybe I'll wind up really liking what my friend did with their book.

Kaniesha: If I had money, then yes! A lot of my friends have the same tastes in fictional subjects that I do anyway, so I think it's likely I'd end up liking whatever they wrote. Like Heather said, supporting your friends any way you can is very important. (They're your friends for a reason!)
